Now is Prime Time for
Broadleaf Weed Applications in Many Turf Areas
Glenn Hardebeck, Turfgrass Research Agronomist, Department of
Agronomy, Purdue University
With the recent change in weather we seem to
be returning to a “typical” October
pattern. For most turfgrass areas across Indiana, October
is the best month for broadleaf weed applications. Applications
can be very effective as late as mid November. While you
may not see activity (burning and curling of the weeds) as quickly
as you might in late spring, the improved control will be evident
next spring with fewer broadleaf weeds flowering in their full
glory. Fall applications are much more likely to kill the
entire plant rather than merely burning the top growth down without
killing the root system of the weed. Remember to fertilize
throughout the fall to encourage the turf to fill in the voids
due to summer heat and/or fall weed control. More information
on broadleaf weed control can be found at http://www.agry.purdue.edu/turf/pubs/ay-9.pdf
